Las Vegas — The UK Visitor Guide

The British traveller's guide to Las Vegas. The Strip, shows, food, day trips to the Grand Canyon, and how to do Vegas without going broke.

Vegas Is Absurd. That's the Point.

Las Vegas shouldn't exist. It's a city of 2.2 million people built in the middle of a desert, powered by the Hoover Dam, and dedicated almost entirely to separating you from your money while making you feel like a king. The Strip — a 4.2-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard — contains the highest concentration of extraordinary hotels, restaurants, shows, and casinos on earth.

For UK visitors, Vegas is a must-see-once experience. The scale is staggering. A single hotel (the Venetian) has 7,117 rooms. The Bellagio fountain show runs every 15 minutes and costs nothing. You can eat sushi at 4am, see a world-class Cirque du Soleil show, play poker with strangers, and watch the desert sunrise — all without leaving one building.

Where to Stay

The Strip (Las Vegas Boulevard)

Stay on The Strip for your first visit. The south end (Mandalay Bay → Bellagio) has the most iconic resorts. The mid-Strip (Cosmopolitan, Aria, Vdara) is the sweet spot for food and nightlife.

Downtown (Fremont Street)

The original Vegas. Fremont Street Experience is a massive LED canopy over a pedestrian mall with live music, cheaper drinks, and looser table minimums. More character, less polish. Budget-friendly.

Budget Range (Per Night)

CategoryPrice RangeExample
Budget£30-80The LINQ, Excalibur, Downtown hotels
Mid-range£80-200Paris, New York-New York, Flamingo
Upscale£200-500+Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, Wynn

Note: Vegas hotel pricing is dynamic. Midweek (Mon-Thu) can be half the weekend price. Book midweek arrivals for the best deals.

The Must-Do Experiences

Walk The Strip at Night

From Mandalay Bay to The Venetian. Takes about 2 hours with stops. The Bellagio fountains, the Mirage volcano (check if still running), the Venetian canals, the Cosmopolitan lobby — it's a theme park for adults. Completely free to walk, gawk, and be amazed.

See a Show

Vegas has the best live entertainment density in the world. Cirque du Soleil runs multiple resident shows (O at Bellagio, Mystère at TI). Stand-up comedy, magic shows, concerts by artists in residency. Tickets from £40-200+. Book in advance for the best seats.

Grand Canyon Day Trip

The single most spectacular day trip in America. South Rim is 4.5 hours by car (or 45 mins by helicopter tour — £250-400). The Grand Canyon is not a "nice view." It is a 277-mile-long, 18-mile-wide, mile-deep hole in the earth. Nothing prepares you for the scale. Even photos don't capture it.

Hoover Dam

35 minutes from The Strip. A 726-foot concrete dam holding back the Colorado River, creating Lake Mead. The engineering is staggering. Take the guided dam tour (£25) that goes inside the structure. Combined with a drive through the desert — a brilliant half-day.

Fremont Street Experience (Downtown)

The old-school Vegas. A massive LED canopy stretching over five blocks of Fremont Street. Live music, cheaper drinks, table games with lower minimums, zip lines overhead. Go after 8pm when the light shows start.

Red Rock Canyon

20 minutes from The Strip. A 13-mile scenic loop drive through dramatic red sandstone formations in the Mojave Desert. Stunning landscapes — hard to believe this is 20 minutes from a casino. £12 per car.

Getting Around

Walking

The Strip is walkable but LONG. Wear comfortable shoes. Expect to walk 10-15 miles per day. Indoor walkways connect several casinos — use the air-conditioning.

The Monorail

Runs along the east side of The Strip from MGM Grand to SLS (now Sahara). £4 single, £10 day pass. Useful but doesn't cover the south end.

Uber/Lyft

Essential for off-Strip destinations, Downtown, and airport transfers. Strip to Downtown is about £10. Strip to airport is £8-15.

Car Rental

Only needed for day trips (Grand Canyon, Red Rock, Hoover Dam). Pick up at the airport.

Insider Tips

  1. Set a gambling budget and stick to it. Decide what you can afford to lose before you arrive. When it's gone, stop. Vegas is designed to make losing feel exciting.
  2. Midweek is dramatically cheaper. Hotel rooms that cost £300 on Saturday might be £60 on Tuesday.
  3. The heat is real. Summer temperatures reach 45°C+. June-August, limit outdoor activities to morning and late evening. Drink water constantly.
  4. Resort fees are hidden. Hotels charge £25-40/night "resort fee" on top of the advertised room rate. This is unavoidable and annoying. Factor it in.
  5. Explore off-Strip. Chinatown (Spring Mountain Road) has incredible Asian restaurants at a fraction of Strip prices. The Arts District has craft breweries and excellent non-tourist dining.
